Amazing archive of humanoid robotics photos from Japan’s Waseda University.

Google’s driverless car screeching madly through an abandoned parking structure may not do much to assuage your fears about an automated future, but it does look pretty fun.

Robotic Hand Types As You Speak

In tests, one hand managed a top speed of 20 words per minute - but by adding a left hand, a typing speed of over 30 wpm is anticipated. The average human typing speed is 33 wpm with two hands.
Of course, some machines have touchscreen control - so the DART hand has its own silicone skin that allows such use in addition to making the robot look more human.

Why is it typing “ho”?

For those of us who’ve been dreaming of having laser-eyes since childhood.

The ever-prepared DARPA has greenlit a project from Boston Dynamics to build the world’s fastest four-legged robot based on a cheetah! In principle, it will be able to sprint faster than a human, zig-zag like a maniac, and stop on a dime. Go go gadget!
Other Boston Dynamics robots worth noting: SquishBot, a soft-animal-like robot that will be able to squeeze into tight spots, and Big Dog, which is the gold standard of rough-terrain robots, able to climb and walk like a champ.

Every year, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has a meeting. This year, they demonstrated a gang of machines designed to help people with disabilities: the highlight being a robot driven by mental commands, for paralyzed or bed-ridden folk to communicate with loved ones and “expand their social interactions.” The brain-machine interface actually allows patients to multitask as they direct the robot.

Good luck, Robonaut 2. As the first dexterous humanoid robot in space, you’re gonna need it.
